Dear Princess Celestia,

It has been many years since you passed your powers on to me. Luna and I work so hard to make sure that the ponies of Equestria never forget you. I am sad to admit that Applejack passed away today, she was 84. I visited her before she passed and asked, begged, for her to let me perform the celestial spell on her, but she refused. She said that she wanted to see Big Mac and the other girls again. She said she would miss me, but I reminded her that I would one day join her. When I find that perfect student who I know can take my place. Many of the ponies who took me in while I lived in Ponyville are gone now.

I am not alone; however, Luna, Spike and I still remain. When Spike leaves, then Luna and I shall continue. When Luna finds her student, and I have a sneaking suspicion that she already has, she will leave me and then I shall prevail. Equestria misses you, dearest princess, but I shall see you again. After I have brought forth the sun for ten thousand years, I shall see you all again, and I know you'll be smiling.

Your faithful student,

Twilight Sparkle

(Many Years Later)

Dear Princess Celestia,

When you chose me as your protégé, did you feel a connection form the second you saw me? Why am I asking this? Well a few days ago I paid the Gifted Unicorn Academy a visit. All the students were performing very well, every pony was working hard and I made sure that each and every student was on task. That's when it happened. I heard a scream from a classroom and I rushed over as quickly as my hooves would carry me. In the room I found a little foal, surrounding him was a swirl of activity. Plants, desks, even a few ponies were swirling around him, surrounded by blue magic. He was shaking, the poor thing, and he looked so scared. I saw what he was doing, he was trying to keep it in; trying to hold back his powers and make sure no one was hurt. I remembered my entrance exam and I smiled fondly before stepping into the room.

I calmed the boys fears and when he began to apologize for making a mess of things I simply smiled, and asked for his name.

He told me his name was Dusk Shine. At that moment I knew, this child would be my protégé. He was like me, but at the same time… he wasn't. Dusk Shine has only been with me for a few days and already he's learned so much. He's a master at levitation. His cutie mark is a magician's hat and wand; he received it the day of his entrance exam.

This boy, I see so much of myself in him that I honestly don't want to pass on my powers. I want him to be happy, not alone like I have been these past four thousand years. Artemis, Luna's protégé, has done his job accordingly. He is a wonderful stallion, and he raises the moon with the same grace and beauty that your sister did, but he is not you. He is not Luna; he's not AJ, Rarity, Rainbow, Pinkie or Fluttershy. He's a close friend, but he could never replace you or any of the girls. Do I really want Dusk Shine to live through thousands of years alone?

I cannot tell you how many times I wished you were here, to guide me and give advice, but you aren't here anymore. I must leave princess, for Artemis has just retired to his chamber, and I must now go and raise the sun.

Your faithful student,

Twilight Sparkle

(Twenty Years Later)

Dear Princess Celestia,

The sun has set and Artemis is out raising the moon. In these past twenty years I have watched Dusk Shine grow from a shy little colt to a strong and intelligent stallion. He rivals even me when it comes to magic. I'm so very proud of his skills, and the other day I brought up the subject of passing my powers down. Dusk Shine agreed, without a single hesitation. I had to make sure, so I asked him again and he chuckled.

"Princess Twilight." He told me, "I have no mother or father; you are the closest thing I have to family. You mean so much to me, and I've seen you suffer by yourself for far too long. You miss your friends don't you?"

When I admitted that I did he smiled, "I will take on your role. I'll make sure no one forgets you."

I asked if he would miss his friends, and a sad expression crossed his face, "Of course I will Princess, I love them, but in my mind and in my heart…  Your happiness comes first."

I must admit that I wept when he said that to me. This boy is like a son to me, it will be so hard saying good bye to him how could I condemn him to the life of loneliness? As if reading my mind he smiled gently and nudged my head.

"When you leave Princess, Artemis, my friends and I shall remain. When my friends leave then Artemis and I shall continue. When Artemis leaves; I shall prevail and wait for that one student who shall take my place."

There were more tears from me, but he wiped them away.

"After the sun has been brought fourth for ten thousand years, I shall see you again Princess."

This boy, even after all these years, I can still see so much of myself in him. He's not ready to run the kingdom yet, so I shall teach him. I will see you soon my princess and I'll be with all of you very soon.

Your still faithful student,

Twilight Sparkle
Even after she passed away, Twilight still writes to Celestia.

I have this weird head cannon where Celestia and Luna aren't actually immortal, but they're actually be-witching themselves to stay young. I call it the "Celestial" spell; it allows the unicorn (or alicorn) to live for precisely 1,000 years. The spell can only be used 10 times, which is why Twilight and Dusk Shine say "after I have risen the sun for 10,000 years..." because they can only live for about 10,000 years.

So yeah, Celestia dies and leaves her throne to Twilight and when Luna passes she leaves her throne to her apprentice Artemis.

Artemis is the name of the gender-bent version of Luna and Dusk Shine is the gender-bent name of Twilight Sparkle.
